Nia is a low-impact movement technique, inspired by dance, martial arts, and mindfulness practices. Nia is easily adaptable to all levels of fitness and experience. Nia creates a playful and powerful experience, boosting pleasure, strength, mobility, stability, and overall well-being. Small group classes are facilitated in a relaxed, welcoming, and non-judgmental atmosphere.

Ongoing Wednesdays, 5:30-7:30 pm. Feel like a new, fun and challenging hobby? Give Argentine Tango a try. Confirm dates as there is no dancing during breaks.
We will do individual exercises and partner activities to understand this improvisational dance! We will explore various concepts of connection (to oneself, to the music, to the dance partner, to the dance floor, to other social dancers).
Parking is available on campus after 5 pm.
What to wear? If you own a pair of salsa shoes, jazz/ballet flats, or Toms, those work great. If not, bring a thick pair of socks to dance in. Partner Dance? You are welcome to join with or without a partner. Those who come alone will be paired up.

Join Balkan dance expert Steve Kotansky and the Folk Arts Center as we present our next dance workshop of the socially distanced era via Zoom, the popular teleconferencing platform.
Steve Kotansky, known widely as a versatile dancer and teacher, has made many research trips to Bulgaria, the former Yugoslavia, Romania, Hungary and Greece. He has taught at major folk dance camps all over North America and Europe and has performed and choreographed for many performing ensembles throughout the U.S. and Europe. Steve is active as a teacher and researcher of dance in North American Albanian and Macedonian Roma communities. Steve brings a lively, in-depth knowledge to his teaching, and an intense joy to his dancing.

Exercises are things like our basic warm up steps for a dance, a simple routine, practice figures and freestyle dancing using a simple figure. The exercises are designed to improve the skills you use in partner dancing. Like Zumba with social dance steps. This is meant to be a workout, not a class.

I've been doing a once-in-a-while program called What? Huh? Wow! (WHW) where I play the dances I don't - and often can't - play at a "regular" session: they're too old, too obscure, too far off the beaten path. In other words, the dances YOU want to do!
Problem is, due to the nature of the dances, it's hard to get a group on the dance floor who can do them. But now, since "the dance floor" is everyone's homes around the world, we can!
So I'm going to do a WHW@H on Zoom for all who want to do That Kind of dances. Sunday, May 31, at 2pm East Coast time (11am West Coast, 1pm Central, 1900 England, 2100 Israel, etc) for 2 hours (or until we run out - ha!). Send requests by email ahead of time or by Chat during the event. I'll play a mix of requests and dances that have very old (or no) dates listed next to them in my play history.
